Guy Verling - St. Mary's CE Primary School
Guy is proud to have been the Head Teacher at St Mary’s CE Primary School and Nursery since 2017.
After completing his degree, he gained his PGCE from Birmingham University in 2004. Guy’s first teaching post as a newly qualified teacher was in Dudley at one of his PGCE placement schools. He then returned to Shropshire in 2006 and started at Randlay Primary School (Telford) in 2007. After a year and a half, Guy became SENDCo and joined the Senior Management Team.
He enjoyed the impact that leading can have on a wider group of pupils other than your individual class. An exciting opportunity then arose to move to Pontesbury CE Primary School as Deputy Head. The role gave a huge insight into the running of a school and the challenges that schools face on a day to day basis.
When the Head Teacher left in 2013, he took over as Acting Head for two terms. Having taken on this role , Guy knew he wanted to become Head of his own school, but wanted to remain teaching so he then moved to Norton in Hales CE Primary School (North Shropshire) in 2014 as a Teaching Head. After a successful Ofsted in January 2017, Guy was ready for a new challenge at a larger school and then joined St Mary’s in September 2017.
Guy explains that each day at St Mary’s is different which is a wonderful thing and keeps challenging all the staff to provide the best possible education for their children. Guy is very proud of the children and staff at St Mary’s; and excited about continuing their journey with Empower Trust; developing the links that we already had through being part of the North Shropshire Teaching Alliance.
Away from work, Guy enjoys spending time with his family, following Shrewsbury Town Football Club and running, taking part (slowly!) in 10kms races and half marathons.
